3. With regard to limited English proficiency does your agency provide translation via your web site or documentation distributed in Spanish to citizens? Various pamphlets on crime prevention, Victim/Witness Information, Sheriff’s Monthly Message, Crime Stoppers Online Reporting Form, Crime Stoppers printed materials. Several publications/forms distributed by personnel and posted to web site.
4. What was your agency budget for 2009? 720 million.
5. Did your agency obtain Federal funding / grants in 2009? If yes, what for and how much? Several/multiple- local, state, federal, Byrne-JAG grants. One of the newest is “Operation Medicine Cabinet” which has been publicized through the Latino community.
6. Did your agency celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in 2009? Yes, we did by local agency events, as well as participation in community events countywide.
7. How many Latinos did your agency hire in 2009? vs the total of new hires? 18 Latino hires vs. 127 total hires (including the 18)
8. How many Latinos were promoted in 2009? 17
9. Who is the highest-ranking Hispanic in your agency and what is their position?

10. Did your agency participate in any Latino event in 2009? And if so which event? Several large events countywide sponsored or coordinated by the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Broward (Fiestas Patronales); Latin Chamber of Broward County (Hollywood Beach Festival); and Hispanic Unity (Noche de Estrellas, etc). BSO also participated in smaller scale local events sponsored by schools, churches, and other community groups.
11. Can your agency identify the first Latino hired and when?
The first known is Robert Rios. He was hired on 1/17/1973 as a deputy. He retired as a Lt.
12. Does your agency participate in any program which detains and arrest illegals based on immigration status? No, unless a specific law enforcement request for assistance is received from the Department of Homeland Security.
13. Does the agency have Spanish speaking employees working all shifts in the Communications Division to facilitate better service to the community? Yes.
14. Would your agency consider being a guest on Latino POLICE Radio, an LOA-FLA Radio program? Yes; Sheriff Lamberti has been on the radio show several times, and Commander Michael Calderin is a co-host.
